"Put on the whole armour of God"
Paul is exhorting the Ephesian Christians to do something. The "whole armour of God" is described in detail in verses 15 through 17.
1) Our loins are to be girt about with truth,
(Ephesians 6:14).
2) Our breastplate is righteousness, (Ephesians 6:14).
3) Our feet are to be shod with the preparation of the gospel of peace,
(Ephesians 6:15).
4) Our faith is to be our shield, (Ephesians 6:16)
5) Our salvation is our helmet, (Ephesians 6:17)
6) And our sword is the word of God, (Ephesians 6:17)
We are to "put on" truth, which can only be found in scripture, John 17:17, "Sanctify them through thy truth : thy word is truth."
We are to "put on" righteousness or rightful living. The Biblical definition of righteousness is found in Ps 119:172, "My tongue shall speak of thy word: for all thy commandments are righteousness.
We are to "put on" the gospel of peace, the word of God, Rom 10:15, "And how shall they preach, except they be sent? as it is written, How beautiful are the feet of them that preach the gospel of peace , and bring glad tidings of good things!"
We are to "put on" our faith, Rom 10:17, "So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God."
We are to "put on" our salvation.
1)
John 3:16, "For
God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever
believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life."
2) Matt 10:32, "Whosoever
therefore shall confess me before men, him will I confess also before my Father
which is in heaven."
3) Luke 13:3, "I tell you,
Nay: but, except ye repent, ye shall all likewise perish."
4) Mark 16:16, "He that
believeth and is baptized shall be saved; but he that believeth not shall be
damned."
5) Matt 19:17, "And he said
unto him, Why callest thou me good? there is none good but one, that is, God:
but if thou wilt enter into life , keep the commandments."
We are to "put on" the word of God, 2 Tim 2:15, "Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.
Putting on the "whole armour" means putting it all on.
"that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil"
Being able to "stand against the wiles of the devil" is contingent upon arming oneself completely and thoroughly, therefore one who is incompletely outfitted will be unable to resist and will fall.
Luke 6:46-48
46 And why call ye me, Lord, Lord , and do not the
things which I say?
47 Whosoever cometh to me, and heareth my sayings, and doeth them, I will shew
you to whom he is like:
48 He is like a man which built an house, and digged deep, and laid the
foundation on a rock: and when the flood arose, the stream beat vehemently upon
that house, and could not shake it: for it was founded upon a rock.
This statement by Paul also affirms that Satan is alive and active and contriving to overthrow us. Paul well knew what Satan is capable of and is cautioning his brethren to educate themselves in the word of God and stand firm.
2 Corinthians 2:11
Lest Satan should get an advantage of us: for we are not ignorant of his
devices.
1 Thess 2:18
Wherefore we would have come unto you, even I Paul, once and again; but Satan
hindered us.
2 Cor 11:3
But I fear, lest by any means, as the serpent [Satan] beguiled Eve through his
subtilty, so your minds should be corrupted from the simplicity that is in
Christ.
2 Cor 11:14
And no marvel; for Satan himself is transformed into an angel of light.
It is quite obvious from these few scriptures that Satan is determined and capable of destroying the faithful Christian. He is crafty and deceitful and his one goal is to destroy as much of mankind as possible. Mankind received one thing that Satan never did which was a chance for redemption.
Those in the religious world who hold to the belief that a child of God cannot so sin as to be eternally lost need to ask themselves why satan would be so determined to bring down the faithful Christian if it were not possible to destroy them.
