Creation Day Six
Introduction
Genesis 1:24–31 records the sixth day when God filled the land with
living creatures and then crowned creation by making mankind in His
image, blessing humanity with purpose, dominion, and provision.
God Fills the
Land with Life
On the sixth day God spoke, and the earth teemed with
life—livestock, creeping things, and beasts of the earth—each
according to its kind (Genesis 1:24–25). Scripture emphasizes kinds
to show God’s order. Variety, usefulness, and beauty serve His wise
design. God saw this work and called it good, a verdict of
completeness and harmony that prepares for the creation of man and
woman.
“Let Us Make
Man”: Divine Counsel and Intention
“Let Us make man in Our image, according to Our likeness” (Genesis
1:26). The plural pronouns reveal the counsel of the Godhead—Father,
Son, and Spirit—fully engaged in forming humanity. God’s wording
signals a uniquely personal act. Humanity is not an afterthought;
mankind is created with intention, dignity, and calling.
The Image
of God in Humanity
We bear God’s image in a spiritual sense, for “God is Spirit” (John
4:24). God forms the spirit of man within him (Zechariah 12:1); He
is the Father of spirits (Hebrews 12:9). Bearing His image includes
moral awareness, reason, creativity, and the capacity for covenant
relationship. Sin stains this image, yet God renews people in
Christ: “put on the new man… created according to God in true
righteousness and holiness” (Ephesians 4:24).
Dominion as
Stewardship
God grants mankind dominion over all living things (Genesis 1:26,
28). Psalm 8 declares that humanity is crowned with glory and honor
and set over the works of God’s hands (Psalm 8:5–8). Dominion is
stewardship. The Creator entrusts His world to image bearers who
govern gratefully, wisely, and reverently, answering to Him for how
they use what He provides.
Male and
Female—God’s Good Design
“In the image of God He created him; male and female He created
them” (Genesis 1:27). Jesus affirms the beginning: “Have you not
read that He who made them at the beginning ‘made them male and
female’” and then speaks of the one-flesh covenant (Matthew 19:4–6).
God blesses the human family with the charge to be fruitful and
multiply and to fill the earth under His rule (Genesis 1:28).
God’s
Provision and Holy Boundaries
God provides food: “every herb… every tree… to you it shall be for
food” (Genesis 1:29–30). Psalm 104 praises the Lord who brings food
from the earth for mankind’s good (Psalm 104:14–15). After the
flood, God extends permission to eat animals with a sacred boundary
regarding blood (Genesis 9:2–4). Provision and limits both display
wisdom and care.
“Very Good”
and the Preeminence of Christ
God surveys His work and declares it “very good” (Genesis 1:31).
Colossians 1 exalts Christ: by Him all things were created and by
His cross peace is made for sinners (Colossians 1:15–20). The One
through whom the world was made is the One through whom fallen image
bearers are reconciled to God.
Living Our
Created Purpose
To live as God’s image bearers is to honor His design, practice
faithful stewardship, and seek renewal in Christ. God made the world
and placed us in it with purpose. In Christ, He restores holiness
and equips His people to reflect His character in work, family, and
worship.
