A Study of Angels

 Introduction:

 There is much interest today on the subject of angels in movies, television, and books.  Much that is presented is incorrect and contradicts the Word of God.  It’s certain that angels do exist.         Psalms 148:2 

 Body:

 I. What Are Angels? 

• Both the Hebrew word “malak” and the Greek word “angellos” primarily mean “messenger.”  Genesis 28:12   Angels were going to and coming from Heaven.
• Angels are part of the “whole family.”  Ephesians 3:14-15
• Angels are created beings.  Colossians 1:16
• Angels are called “sons of God.”  Job 1:6
• Angels are described as “holy ones.”  Psalms 89:5,7

 II. Classifications of Angels 

• Cherubim

They guarded the entrance to the Garden of Eden.  Genesis 3:24

Their golden figures covered the mercy seat.  Exodus 25:18-22

Their designs were on the veils of the tabernacle.  Exodus 26:1   Later their designs were in the inner sanctuary of the temple.         I Kings 6:23-29 

• Seraphim   Isaiah 6:2,6
• Archangels

The voice of the archangel will announce the end of time.            I Thessalonians 4:16

Michael   Jude 9,   Revelation 12:7

Gabriel may or may not have been an archangel.  Luke 1:19,26 

• Evil angels   II Peter 2:4, Jude 6

Satan has his angels.  Matthew 25:41, Revelation 20:10

 III. The Nature of Angels 

• Angels are spirit beings.  Hebrews 1:14                                                
• They do not marry.  Mark 12:25                                                      
• They do not die physically.  Luke 20:36
• Angels have greater power than men.  II Peter 2:11                       
• Yet their ability and knowledge are both limited.  Daniel 10:13, Matthew 24:36
• Angels are countless in number.  Hebrews 12:22, Revelation 5:11
