Primary Text: John 3:16

	Introduction
	John 3:16 is among the
most quoted verses in Scripture, yet it is often misunderstood. To
understand its message correctly, we must consider its context. The verse
occurs within a conversation between Jesus and Nicodemus during the Passover
Feast in Jerusalem (John 2:23–3:21). Within this setting, Jesus explains
that belief in Him involves obedience, repentance, and spiritual rebirth.

	Jesus and Nicodemus
	Nicodemus was a Pharisee
and a member of the Jewish ruling council. He came to Jesus by night and
acknowledged Him as a teacher from God because of the miracles Jesus
performed (John 3:1–2). Jesus immediately turned the conversation toward
salvation, declaring that one must be born again to see the kingdom of God
(John 3:3). Nicodemus was puzzled, asking how an older man could be born
	again (John 3:4).

	Jesus explained that
spiritual rebirth, not physical birth, is required for entrance into the
kingdom. “Unless one is born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the
kingdom of God” (John 3:5). This new birth occurs when a person submits to
God’s will and obeys the gospel. Jesus compared the process to the movement
of the wind—its presence cannot be seen directly, but its effects are
evident. In the same way, the Spirit’s work is visible in the changed life
of one who is born again (John 3:6–8).

	The Example from the
	Old Testament
	When Nicodemus struggled
to understand, Jesus used an event from Israel’s history. As Moses lifted up
the bronze serpent in the wilderness, those who looked upon it lived, and
those who refused died (John 3:14; Numbers 21:8–9). This pointed forward to
the time when the Son of Man would be lifted up on the cross, offering life
to all who trust and obey. “Whoever believes in Him should not perish but
	have eternal life” (John 3:15).

	The faith that saves is
an obedient trust in God’s instruction. The Israelites demonstrated belief
by looking at the serpent as God commanded. In the same way, believers today
show genuine faith through obedience to Christ—by being born of water and
	the Spirit.

	The Meaning of John
	3:16
	Jesus then declared the
message of divine love: “For God so loved the world that He gave His only
begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have
	everlasting life.” The word believes
in the original text refers to those whose faith is active and living. The
surrounding context shows that this belief includes repentance, obedience,
	and spiritual rebirth.

	Faith that saves is
trust in action. It is the kind of faith that leads to obedience. James
wrote that even demons believe that God exists, yet their belief does not
produce salvation (James 2:19). True belief moves the heart to obey. This is
why Jesus’ disciples baptized in the Judean countryside soon after this
conversation (John 3:22). Their obedience reflected faith in the message of
	Christ.

	The Result of True
	Belief
	Those who respond to the
gospel through obedient faith become children of God. “For you are all sons
of God through faith in Christ Jesus. For as many of you as were baptized
into Christ have put on Christ” (Galatians 3:26–27). Faith gives a person
the right to become a child of God, and obedience brings that relationship
to completion (John 1:12). The believer who continues in this faith and
obedience receives eternal life (John 3:36). From the earliest days of the
church, believers who acted upon their faith were united together in Christ
	(Acts 2:44).

	Conclusion
	John 3:16 does not
describe faith that is passive. It reveals God’s love for all and the call
for people to respond through obedience. God loved the world enough to offer
His Son as the sacrifice for sin, but only those who respond in faithful
obedience experience the new birth that leads to eternal life. Salvation
belongs to those whose belief moves them to action—those who are born of
water and the Spirit, walking in the light of the gospel.

	Context of John 3:16
	Sermon Outline

	I. The Setting of
	the Conversation (John 2:23–3:2)

		• Jesus was in Jerusalem for the Passover Feast.
		• Nicodemus, a Pharisee and ruler of the Jews, recognized Jesus as a
		teacher from God.
		• His visit at night reflected curiosity and caution.

	II. The Requirement
of the New Birth (John 3:3–8)

		• Jesus declared the necessity of spiritual rebirth.
		• The new birth involves water and the Spirit.
		• The Spirit’s work is seen through transformation in the believer’s
		life.

	III. The
Illustration of the Bronze Serpent (John 3:14–15)

		• Moses lifted up the bronze serpent, and those who looked upon it
		lived.
		• Jesus would be lifted up on the cross, bringing eternal life to those
		who respond in faith.
		• Faith and obedience are inseparable in God’s plan of redemption.

	IV. The True
	Meaning of Belief (John 3:16–22)

		• “Belief” means a trusting obedience—the faith of “the believing ones.”
		• Acknowledging God alone is not enough; faith must move one to act.
		• Jesus and His disciples baptized, demonstrating that obedience
		accompanies belief.

	V. The Result of
Obedient Faith (Galatians 3:26–27; John 3:36)

		• Those who respond to God’s call through faith and baptism become
		children of God.
		• Eternal life is the promise to all who live in obedient trust.
		• The early church consisted of believers who had acted upon their faith
		(Acts 2:44).

	VI. Application

		• Saving faith always expresses itself through obedience to Christ’s
		commands.
		• To be born again is to submit to God’s will through repentance and
		baptism.
		• Eternal life belongs to those whose belief is demonstrated through
		action.

	Call to Action
	Jesus told Nicodemus
that entrance into the kingdom comes through being born again of water and
the Spirit. The same truth remains today. Examine your faith in light of
this message. If your belief has never led you to obedience, now is the time
to respond. Believe in Christ, repent of sin, and be baptized for the
forgiveness of sins. Then walk daily as one reborn by the Spirit of God.
